Since the 2009 edition, a modified form of the rule has been used for the World Baseball Classic. Unlike the standard rule, the batting order may not start from a different place. Through the 2013 edition, the first inning in which teams started with runners on first and second was the 13th. The rule was not used in either the 2009 or 2013 editions because no game lasted more than 11 innings. For the 2017 World Baseball Classic, the rule was modified to use extra runners for the first time in the 11th inning, and it would see its first use in a second-round game between Japan and the Netherlands at the Tokyo Dome. Japan won that game thanks to a sacrifice bunt and a 2-run hit.
2000 — The New York Yankees become the first team in more than a quarter-century to win three straight World Series championships, beating the New York Mets 4-2. The Yankees match the Oakland Athletics’ three in a row from 1972-74, and win their fourth title in five years.
World series game 1 2024
Freddie Freeman’s walk-off grand slam sent the Dodgers home happy with a win reminiscent of 1988 in more ways than one. The game began at 5:11 p.m. PT and was 3 hours and 27 minutes — over at 8:38. 1988 Game 1 had a 5:35 p.m. start and 3:04 time of game — over at 8:39.
• The Dodgers became the 10th team to win a World Series Game 1 in walk-off fashion. They joined the 2023 Rangers, ‘15 Royals, ‘00 Yankees, 1988 Dodgers, 1977 Yankees, 1958 Braves, 1954 Giants, 1949 Yankees and 1939 Yankees. Eight of the nine previous teams went on to win the series, with the Braves being the only loss.
• Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s three stolen bases tied the World Series record, with 2016 Game 5 Rajai Davis (Cleveland), 2008 Game 3 B.J. Upton (Rays), 1968 Game 3 Lou Brock (Cardinals), 1967 Game 7 Brock, 1965 Game 5 Willie Davis (Dodgers) and 1909 Game 3 Honus Wagner (Pirates). Two of Chisholm’s steals came in the 10th inning, making him the second player with multiple stolen bases in a World Series extra inning, along with the Cubs’ Jimmy Slagle in 1907 Game 1.
• The similarities with Gibson’s are remarkable — a hobbled superstar in Game 1 at Dodger Stadium. In fact, his and Freeman’s are the only walk-off homers in World Series history where the team was down to its final out. The only other such homer in any postseason round was by Houston’s Yordan Alvarez in the 2022 American League Division Series Game 1.
• Birthdays are important. Juan Soto became the first player with a birthday hit in the World Series since the Royals’ Eric Hosmer in 2014 Game 3. He’s the second with a hit and walk in a World Series birthday game, joining the Cardinals’ Keith Hernandez in 1982 Game 7.

New World features an in-game exchange where you can turn real money into Marks of Fortune, which is the currency used to buy things in the microtransaction store. The most basic exchange rate is $4.99 for 5,000 Marks of Fortune, but the larger packs offer incremental bonuses based on tier. For example, the largest pack gives you 60,000 Marks of Fortune for $49.99. This is all run directly through your Steam wallet, so you don’t need an Amazon account for any of this.
Sure, you can find plenty of lore scrolls that vaguely tell you what’s going on, but NPCs are sparse and their quests are almost always written with no more enthusiasm than “go here and kill 10 rats, because I said so.” It’s nice that the main quest at least forces people to cooperate for a few dungeons, but it still ends on a note so forgettable that you can blink and miss it entirely. Just a short conversation with a throwaway character, after all of that? Really?
This threatens to turn the compelling faction rivalry into a fight between a few different companies—there are only 11 territories up for grabs, and companies can claim more than one—leaving everyone else on the outside begging for scraps. The other PvP mode, Outpost Rush, doesn’t need to be scheduled by a company and anyone can play, but only once they’ve hit level 60. It’s a long time to wait. At the time of writing, the mode has actually been disabled due to a queue bug, and thus has been inaccessible for over a week.
It sounds like a killer action RPG pitch, and this is what Amazon describes it as. In the narrative prologue, it plays like an entirely solo action adventure game, and a pretty great one. I found the story compelling in how it teased the mystery, combat felt fresh thanks to my Musketeer build fitting the era but not mimicking the thousands of other action RPGs out there, and the character of Grace O’Malley (based on a real pirate) was written with verve and humour. It was the kind of game I could see myself spending a lot of time in. And then it became an MMO.
Even though so little has changed after hundreds of hours of grinding, I still can’t say I know New World. It is an MMO in desperate need of an identity. There’s a colonial aesthetic and old world pioneers exploring a magical island that looks like a big North American forest, but the themes of colonialism aren’t really explored at all. It’s just cosmetic. And the PvE quests and quest-givers that normally do the crucial work of fleshing out an MMO setting do nothing of the sort.
